01/11/10 my room, night - Well hair is newly washed, which means I won’t have to do anything with it tomorrow morning, yes!!! J Dinner was good. And afterwards we talked about tomorrow. My host mom is taking me to the university and will meet me at the north gate at 5pm that same day to take me back. I’m so glad she’s coming with because I would get lost and miss the placement test and then get deported with a huge red “failure” stamped across my forehead. Well maybe not that, but I would get lost. XP She said we would go and get my alien registration taken care of, exchange the rest of my American money to yen, and get me a commuter’s card the day after tomorrow. We are eating breakfast at 6:45 and leaving the house at 7:20 to make it to the University by 8:45. I am not sure why she wants to get me there an hour early for my test but I won’t complain as long as I get there.

When I went down for my shower I got into the bathroom and I heard my host mom come running out of the kitchen saying “Gomen, gomen, wasureta, wasureta!” (I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I forgot, I forgot.) She had forgotten to fill the tub. Since I am still like a guest I can’t fill it myself. I want her to teach me how/ let me do it soon. In order for that to happen I have to become uchi first, which means inside or within or in-group. Right now I am still soto (outside, out-group) and so she won’t let me help clear the table or draw the bath or anything. Guests don't do that. Things will be easier when I become uchi; for one I think I’ll be able to ask for milk at meals…

Any-hoo she turned the bathtub on (it automatically fills itself with water the correct temperature and keeps the water at that tempterature). And then she told me to come wait in the kitchen where it’s warm. This was all so unnecessary because I was not planning on using the tub (not if I was washing my hair. Once I am finished washing it I have to immediately comb and braid it so I wasn’t planning on lounging in the tub at all.) However, I let it go. In the kitchen she showed me a photo album of a recent trip to Spain that she took with a friend. Finally got in the bathroom and started on the hair. I was in there longer than usual (b/c of the hair) and I started coughing because there was so much steam from the hot water and it has no where to escape. Steam is water vapor and if you breathe in water your lungs want it out so I was sort of drowning a little. It was WEIRD. The rest of it was uneventful. Although I was not very comfortable with the hair being near the space heater (fire hazard you know) so I turned that puppy off. I need to go to sleep soon but wanna review first. Hopefully I have time to write again soon. 22:56 (J time)

  2. So exciting! Thanks for sharing. This reminds me of when a Norwegian student arrived at my parents house in the 1970's. She used the shower, which our family never did and so we did not have shower curtains....anyway, the kitchen ceiling fell in below. Despite that, she became a member of our family and we still correspond. Best wishes and hang in there. Helen
